I did not arrive at marketing through a straight path. I started out as a biomedical scientist, moved into operational and marketing management, and realised that what kept drawing me back to marketing was helping businesses figure out how to market themselves well. In 2017, just four months after arriving in New Zealand knowing nobody, I built my own health and fitness brand. A female owned, boutique, luxury health and fitness experience that had never existed in my area before. Within six months it was fully booked. Within eight months it had reached six figures. One of my own fitness coaches approached me to buy it. I scaled it to a franchise model, sold it in 2020, and it is still running successfully today. Since then I have worked across startups, small businesses, events companies and nonprofits in New Zealand, building marketing foundations, systems and structure for businesses that had never had them before. With my husband and four other directors I co-own Geo Data Solutions, a geotechnical testing and data analysis company. I advise on marketing for the business and this year it is set to turn over $3 million. Across every business I have worked with, the same pattern shows up. Capable, committed founders and business owners putting everything into their marketing and not seeing the return, because the strategy underneath it was never put in place.
